PUSHUPS & MODIFICATIONS
How To Perform Pushups
Pushups are a classic upper body exercise that strengthen the entire upper body, including the chest, shoulders, arms and abs. Whether you're a beginner or at an advanced fitness level, there are different modifications that you can incorporate into your workouts.
Level/Difficulty: Beginner to Advanced
Muscle Group(s): chest, arms, shoulders, core
Equipment: none
Exercise groups: Lower Body Exercises, Full Body Exercises, Lower Body Exercises, Core Strengthening Exercises, Upper Body Exercises, Posture Strengthening Exercises
Coaching Cues:
Core engaged, extend hips, retract and protract shoulderblades
Before starting:
Be sure to use a weight that is not too heavy.
Hands should be positioned just outside of the shoulders, and feet (or knees for Level 1) should be hip-width apart.
Hips should be in line with the shoulders, and the lower back should have a neutral curve—not completely flat, but not overly curved either.
Inhale and brace/engage your core, then bend your elbows to lower yourself towards the floor. Exhale as you push away from the floor, and repeat for reps.
